The Subtle Solar Intensity Meter

Photos of my art piece "The Subtle Solar Intensity Meter!" (All Front-facing Surfaces Are White.) I made this for Dawn as stimulated by wanting to make something for her from an idea I have had for a long time.*

1) View of the front with the subtle western Pennsylvania sunlight coming in from the back - resulting in the color reflections on the front, white surfaces. The intensity of the colors increases with the intensity of the light coming in from the back.

2) View of the front with no backlight and lit from the front with a flashlight - showing that the front-facing surfaces are white.

3) View of the front with Dawn holding a flashlight in the back - resulting in the color reflections on the front, white surfaces.

4) View of the back - showing the successive holes in the heart segments - to allow more backlight to give the color reflections onto the front surfaces.

* The original idea for this project came from my seeing a "relatively minor art piece" in an art museum in Los Angeles while visiting my sister Sue there in 1971. That very simple piece was jumbled in close together with some other minor, "modern" pieces and consisted of only a few vertical rectangular boards (about six feet high) painted white on the fronts and a color on the backs. Its artistic subtlety was successful in capturing my attention as I walked by, and over the years I have thought about pursuing the idea myself with white and colored stained glass, as well as other materials, such as white and colored tiles. (I have a bunch of stained glass I bought years ago for the project.) I have had fun devising numerous designs in my head over the years. Knowing that those more complex designs would take a long time to implement, they have not materialized at all - so, stimulated to make something for Dawn, I recently decided to finally implement one version of the concept with cardstock. Of course, I am sure that Dawn's first thought after seeing it was "What am I going to do with that thing?!"
