Field: Environmental Toxicology

My research activities focus on the biological effects of water pollutants. My recent projects have evaluated the toxicity of acid mine drainage components (e.g., iron and aluminum) to aquatic organisms and macroinvertebrate communities. A new area of interest for me is nitrate contamination of well drinking water and its associated health effects. Dr. Amadu Ayebo and I are studying this problem in a rural mid-western Pennsylvania farming community. I am also developing an aquatic invertebrate model to study methemoglobinemia caused by nitrite exposure.
