Celebrating E. D. Winstead's Life!

E. D. Winstead's grandfather "Pa" John Lugeness "Lou" Winstead holding a birthday cake.  This photo was taken at "The Farm" in Wilson, NC where E. D. Winstead's parents Frank and Nettie Winstead lived after losing their house in town during the depression in the early thirties.  "Pa" lived with his son's family for about twenty years after he stopped farming.  In town "Pa," E. D. Winstead, and E. D.'s older brother Ollin shared a room.  Frank Winstead owned a restaurant during that time and "Pa" barbequed the pigs (five pigs at a time) sold at the restaurant.

1854 - 1938

His father's Bible lists John's middle name as "Lugeness," and he was called "Lou." Later public records list his name as Eugene. His wife Viola taught school in Toisnot before her marriage. She died in childbirth. John lived with his son, Frank, from 1922 until his death.

Possum Birthday Dinner

From the newspaper article:

"Mr. Eugene, (Lou) Winstead celebrated his 81st birthday at his home with his son, Mr. Frank Winstead, some three miles Northwest of Wilson, on the 18th of December, Wednesday, and enjoyed a delicious possum dinner. The best part about it was that he made the box, set it on the swamp and caught the possum within four or five days. In the meantime two cats happened to get in the box.

Mr. and Mrs. George G. Winstead, and Mrs. C. W. Crockett of Nash County, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Winstead were at the dinner.

Mr. Winstead was much surprised when a cake with 81 candles on same was placed before him.

Mr. Winstead is in good health, and is able to get around and read without his glasses."
