Map of Children's Birth Places

Front: Sue, Ray, Gene
Back: Dee (Ed), Jo, E. D.
Since EDW was an Army officer,
the family moved around. Just for example, the map above shows where EDW and
Jo's children were born. Our mother told us periodically: "Home is where the
family is."
1: Ed=Dee) Fort Mills, Corregidor, Philippines (born
just before WWII): Our father fought in the Battle of Corregidor there and then
was held as a Prisoner of War by the Japanese in various places in the
Philippines for about three years. "Today, Fort Mills on Corregidor Island,
Philippines, is a protected historical landmark and tourist destination,
functioning as a museum and a memorial to the pivotal World War II battle fought
there."
2: Ray) Fort Monroe, Virginia (born just after WWII):
Our father was there in the Army's Coast Artillery School. Today, Fort Monroe is
a National Monument with the U.S. National Park Service.
3: Sue) Fort Scott, the
Presidio of San Francisco, California: Our father was there in the Army's
Artillery School. Today, Fort Scott is a part of the National Park Service. We
actually lived on the other side of the Golden Gate Bridge in Fort Baker,
literally in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge. Today, Fort Baker in
California is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, also managed by
the National Park Service, and is a popular destination known for its views of
the San Francisco Bay and the Golden Gate Bridge.
4: Gene) Fort Davis, Canal
Zone, Panama: Our father was there at Fort Davis as Post Commander, responsible
for defending one of the Panama Canal's Locks nearby - the first set of locks on
the Atlantic Side - against a possible attack during the Korean War. Today, "the
Universidad Tecnológica de Panamá (Centro Regional de Colón) is located at
Antiguo Fuerte Davis in Colón, Panama, which is the same location as the
historical Fort Davis."
